What’s the difference between folic acid and folinic acid?
Folic acid is a synthetic form of Vitamin B9. It is often used as a food additive to fortified processed foods with added Vitamin B9. This form of Vitamin B9 is not made in the human body nor can it be found in natural food sources made by mother earth - this is why it is deemed synthetic. This is the form most commonly found in prenatal supplements. Folinic acid is an active form of Vitamin B9 that our body makes from the food we eat. This means that unlike folic acid, folinic acid is natural and does not require activation to be useful to the body like folic acid does. Folic acid and folinic acid are chemically very different forms of B9. As a synthetic ingredient, research shows that for some women, Folic acid is difficult to absorb and use due to their genetics and|or health status at the time of conception and leading into conception. For this reason, folinic acid is considered to be the better form of vitamin B9 for all women trying to concieve, regardless of genetics or health status. Folinic acid performs really well in human studies. This natural form of Vitamin B9 has a higher bioavailability, making it easier for our bodies to use than folic acid. This is why Folate Restore includes folinic acid instead of folic acid- an activated form of natural Vitamin B9.
